Kunena, translated from Swahili meaning "to speak," arose out of a fork of the former Fireboard forum with a new team and some of the previous developers, including several Joomla core developers.

Many fixes and new features, which had been planned for past releases but never implemented, had been added to the initial release. Kunena 1.0.x was fully compatible with all prior versions of Fireboard and upgrades are automatic. Migrating from Fireboard to Kunena couldn't be easier. Simply uninstall Fireboard, update any menu links, and you're ready to go.

Kunena 1.5.11 is the most recent stable Joomla 1.5 native version of Kunena. Only a few months after the launch of Kunena, 1.5 marked a major milestone in the development of the next generation forum component for Joomla.

We are currently working hard on Kunena 1.6 the next major milestone of the Kunena project. Many long requested new features and functions have been integrated. CHeck back regularly to find the latest about this exciting new release of Kunena.

Two Places for Permission Settings

Kunena is using the Joomla Groups for the permissions right management. There are two ways to set permissions:

1. General Security Settings for the complete Kunena Forum (Components -> Kunena Forum -> Kunena Configuration -> Security). These settings take effect in the complete Kunena Forum, with all categories and forums inside.

2. Forum Advanced Configuration (Components -> Kunena Forum -> Forum Administration). These settings take effect only in the forum or category, that you just create or edit. Therefore you can create uncountless categories and forums with different permission settings and for different (joomla) groups.
